Anger Management: How to Understand and Control Your Reactions

Anger is a normal human emotion.

It can arise when we experience injustice, disappointment, pressure, threat, or feel that someone has crossed our boundaries.

The problem is usually not that we feel angry, but how we choose to express that anger.

Recognise the Early Warning Signs

Anger may be accompanied by:

  • muscle tension,

  • faster breathing,

  • increased heart rate,

  • a clenched jaw,

  • a strong urge to respond immediately,

  • aggressive thoughts.

The earlier we recognise these signs, the more choices we have about how to respond.

Create a Pause

When you feel the intensity rising, remember that you do not have to respond immediately.

You can say:

“I need a little time before we continue this conversation.”

Stepping away for a few minutes can help reduce the intensity of the situation.

Explore What Lies Behind the Anger

Sometimes, behind anger there may be:

  • fear,

  • disappointment,

  • a sense of injustice,

  • a need for respect,

  • a need for security,

  • a feeling that we are not being heard.

Understanding the underlying need can lead to more effective communication.

Communicate Without Attacking

Instead of saying:

“You never listen to me!”

Try:

“When this happens, I feel that I am not being heard, and I would like us to find a better way to communicate.”

Conclusion

Managing anger does not mean suppressing it.

It means recognising the emotion and choosing a way of expressing it that protects both ourselves and our relationships.
